The hip hop world is in mourning after multiple outlets confirmed that DMX tragically passed away on Friday afternoon (April 9). The 50-year-old rap icon had been in a coma and on life support for one week after suffering a heart attack.

“We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days,” a statement from his family read. “Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever.”

“We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time. Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle and the man the world knew as DMX,” they continued. “We will share information about his memorial service once details are finalized.”

New York’s White Plains Hospital, where DMX received treatment, also added: “White Plains Hospital extends its deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Simmons, as well as his friends and legions of fans who expressed their unwavering support during this difficult time. Earl Simmons passed away peacefully with family present after suffering a catastrophic cardiac arrest.”

On social media, fans, friends and past collaborators reacted to the news.

“If you listen to my music and know me, you know how I feel about DMX,” CJ Fly tweeted. “I’m so heartbroken.”

“Rest in Heaven DMX,” Chance the Rapper added.

“I had the honor of [Hype Williams] inviting me to chill on the set of ‘BELLY’ for the scene at Justin’s and in The Tunnel. You were the hungriest ni**a in New York at the time and destined for stardom,” Consequence reminisced. “Rest in Heaven DMX.”

On Instagram, Swizz Beatz posted a series of tributes and wrote, “DMX 4 LIFE. You changed my life King!”

We at REVOLT send our deepest condolences to X’s family, friends and fans at this time. Rest In Peace to a legend. See fans’ and friends’ tributes below.
