A reboot of the 1990 film House Party is in the works. According to Deadline, LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Entertainment production company is set to produce a remake of the popular Black movie.

The original movie — produced by New Line Cinema — follows high school student Christopher “Kid” Reid who sneaks out of his home while grounded to attend a house party hosted by his best friend, Christopher “Play” Martin. The movie — which was credited for bringing hip hop into the mainstream — featured John Witherspoon and helped to launch the careers of Full Force and Tisha Martin-Campbell among other stars.

For the remake, SpringHill and New Line hoped to follow the blueprint of the first movie and cast rising stars. With that in mind, they landed on Jorge Lendeborg Jr. and Tosin Cole — who are in negotiations to lead the reboot — and a few surprise cameos. Female counterparts for the new “Kid ‘n Play” have not yet been casted.

Many people expressed their disinterest in a new rendition of the 90s film.

“The beauty of House Party was undeniable chemistry and culture that I don’t thing exist,” tweeted one user. “A House party type movie… definitely. A reboot/remake. Nah B.”

Another person said that a reboot would “never recapture the magic of the OG.”

Others reacted to the news with excitement. “I already know that LeBron and Maverick House Party reboot gonna be fye,” wrote one person, while another penned the tweet, “House Party reboot gonna be fire. Debate ya mama. Debate ya daddy.”

The House Party reboot will be the second time James adds his twist to a classic movie. The NBA star recently debuted the trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy, a sequel to Space Jam, the 1996 film starring basketball legend Michael Jordan.
