Excessive speed caused Tiger Woods to crash his SUV resulting in serious injuries, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced on Wednesday (April 7). According to an investigation by the sheriff’s department, the pro golfer was driving between 84 and 87 mph on a downhill road that had a 45-mph speed limit.

Authorities said Wednesday that the stretch of road is a common place for car wrecks due to drivers hitting high speeds. Sheriff Villanueva said it was solely Woods’ speed that caused the crash and re-stated that Woods was not impaired by drugs or alcohol and was not driving distractedly prior to the accident.

According to officials, Woods appeared to have mistakenly hit the accelerator with his foot rather than the brake pedal when he realized he was speeding out of control. The World Golf Hall of Famer was not issued any traffic citations after the crash.

As reported by REVOLT, Woods was hosting the Genesis Invitational tournament in February when he was injured in the single-car crash. After hitting a curb and flipping over, Woods had to be extradited out of his SUV and rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.

statement from Woods at the time confirmed he suffered multiple “open fractures” to his right leg. The 45-year-old reportedly underwent multiple surgeries for severe leg injuries, including shattered tibia and fibula bones and injuries to his foot and ankle that required screws and pins.

Last month, Woods returned to his Florida home after being discharged from the hospital. On Twitter, he thanked his supporters and staff at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

“Happy to report that I am back home and continuing my recovery,” he wrote. “I am so grateful for the outpouring of support and encouragement that I have received over the past few weeks.”
