Genevieve Hansen, a Minneapolis firefighter who witnessed the death of George Floyd, took the stand to give her testimony about how the former Minneapolis police officers prevented her from helping.

Hansen, who is also a licensed EMT, said she was walking near the scene on May 25, 2020 when she came upon the Floyd incident. At the time, she was off-duty, but she immediately identified herself to the former cops — Derek Chauvin, Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane — who were on the scene so that she could help Floyd.

However, Hansen said Thao told her not to get involved.

“He said something along the lines of if you really are a Minneapolis firefighter, you would know better than to get involved,” she said.

Hansen, who wore her firefighter uniform to court, began to get emotional on the stand as she testified about not being able to help Floyd. “There was no medical assistance on scene and I got there and I could have given medical assistance. That’s exactly what I should have done,” she said.

Prosecutors also played video footage of Hansen pleading with the cops to check Floyd’s pulse. She also called 911, but says she wished she called sooner.

“I should have called 911 immediately, but I didn’t and when things calmed down I realized that I wanted them to know what was going on. I wanted to basically report it,” Hansen said.

Once the ambulance left with Floyd, the firefighter said she stood there in “disbelief” and felt “helpless” about what she witnessed “because there was a man being killed, and I would have… had I had access to a call similar to that, I would have been able to provide medical attention to the best of my abilities and this human was denied that.”

Day two of Chauvin’s murder trial has been adjourned for the day. Witness testimony will resume Wednesday morning (March 31) at 10:30 a.m. ET.
