Master P wants to own a historically Black college or university (HBCU).

On Wednesday (March 10), the No Limit Records founder took to Instagram to share his plans with his followers. “So, y’all know I always wanted to own an NBA team, but now I want to own an HBCU. It’s so important that we educate the culture. This message is all about educating our people,” he said during the clip. “Shoutout to LeBron and the NBA for having the All-Star Game there, but when I googled who owns HBCUs and who are the founders, I was shocked. And I just want you guys to do the same thing.”

He continued by giving the viewers a quick fact about HBCUs. “Did you know that HBCUs graduate more females than any other colleges in the world?” he asked. “It makes you tougher, harder, stronger when you graduate from an HBCU.”

Master P also shared that he wanted to attend Southern University when he was younger and thought that it was “beautiful” to see so many Black people receiving their education.

“I just want you guys to do your research and anybody that’s listening to this and has a business, I want y’all to join this movement with me. We need to make sure that our kids get educated the way the other cultures are educated. And that funding is put back into our education. … We gotta change the narrative and it’s going to be with economic empowerment,” he concluded.

Recently, the spotlight has been refocused on HBCUs, especially following the reemergence of the Black Lives Matter movement last summer. Earlier this month, the NBA pledged to donate $3 million to HBCUs and communities of color that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The proceeds will go to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) — which supports 47 HBCUs — the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) — which provides help to 37 member schools — the Direct Relief and the Fund for Health Equity.
