Pop Smoke’s posthumous debut album Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon has reached the top spot 17 times since it was first released in July 2020. According to Billboard, the feat hasn’t happened in over 30 years.

The album’s success outlasted Eminem’s Recovery album, which reached the Top R&B/Hip Hop chart 16 weeks. MC Hammer’s highly celebrated album, Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt Em, still holds the chart-topping record with 29 weeks in 1990.

Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon was executive produced by 50 Cent after Pop Smoke was tragically killed during a home invasion in February 2020. The album ceremoniously featured Quavo, Roddy Rich, King Combs, Lil Baby and DaBaby, among others. It was released on July 3, and followed by a deluxe version on the late rapper’s 21st birthday.

The album sold 251,000 album-equivalent units during its first week. Two million copies of the album have been sold, plus several singles, such as “The Woo,” “Mood Swings” and “Dior” have been certified platinum by The RIAA.

“Dior” is nominated in the best rap performance category at the 2021 Grammy Awards. During an interview with GQ last year, Pop’s label executive Steven Victor said the Grammy nomination wasn’t enough.

“How does he not get nominated for Album of the Year or Rap Album of the Year or Best New Artist?” Victor questioned. “This is his only chance to get nominated for these awards. So to me, the Grammys is cap. I don’t know who’s making these decisions. He should’ve been nominated for ‘Dior’ in more than one category, he should’ve been nominated for Best New Artist, he should’ve been nominated for Album of the Year, and he should’ve been nominated for Rap Album of the Year. He should’ve swept the whole thing. It doesn’t make any sense.”

On Friday (March 5), the Brooklyn-bred rapper made his film debut in Eddie Huang’s Boogie. The coinciding soundtrack features two new signature Pop Smoke songs: The remix to “No Cap” and “Fashion.”
