FKA Twigs announced her latest single “Don’t Judge Me” earlier this week, the day before its release date. She also confirmed contributions from UK rapper Headie One and producer Fred again…, The single arrived paired with a stunning music video, with direction led by FKA Twigs herself and Emmanuel Adjei. For his verse, Headie One vents about the struggles of being a Black man in the UK:

You know bein’ black, bein’ from the hood and seventeen is powerless. The only change is when you get yourself a heater. I don’t know why me and them oppers started beefin’./ Do I blame me, or the Willie Lynch fury? Born in the gutter, know well my choice to be here. Funny how both my parents done the most to be here. We can walk free, but are we really walkin’ free here? How can this be home when I feel I wanna flee here? I can’t trust the police force and I can’t trust the media. Learned more about my people from the streets than from my teachers.

In 2020, twigs was featured on Headie One and Fred’s collaborative project, GANG, on an interlude with a similar name, “Judge Me.” The new “Don’t Judge Me” assumingly serves as the completed version of the previous interlude. Last year she also appeared on Ty Dolla $igns album on the lead single “Ego Death” alongside Kanye West and Skrillex. She dropped off a slew of singles in 2019, including “cellophane,” “holy terrain,” “home with you,” and “sad day.” Her last project was 2019’s MAGDALINE, a nine-track project with a single feature from Future. Before that was her beloved LP1 project, which she released in 2014.
