Lil Wayne’s attorney believes that his client’s looming gun charge was not the reason he endorsed Donald Trump for reelection last year.

In an interview with The New York Times, Attorney Bradford Cohen, who also represents Kodak Black, said Weezy’s support for the former president was not to avoid going to prison for his pending 2019 gun charges.

“I think they had a very strong connection,” Cohen said during an interview on Wednesday (Jan. 20). “(Trump’s) in the entertainment world. He’s got a style that’s similar in terms of the way that he carries himself and a lot of rappers and people in the industry relate to that.”

Cohen believes Wayne’s support of Trump was a factor in the president’s pardon decision. “It never hurts that someone gets a full understanding of an individual when they’re just looking at a piece of paper,” he said. “In hindsight, I guess it worked out.”

Last year, the “A Milli” emcee was charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition as a felon after someone made an anonymous tip to the police. That led Miami cops and federal agents to search his private jet. Authorities reportedly found $26,000 in cash, a firearm, cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, heroin, pain killers ad prescription-strength cough syrup. Wayne, who was facing 10 years in prison, ultimately plead guilty to the charges.

Last October, the Louisiana rapper endorsed Trump for reelection against Joe Biden. He took to Twitter to share a photo of himself with the former president and praised his work in the Black community. “Just had a great meeting with @realdonaldtrump @potus besides what he’s done so far with criminal reform, the platinum plan is going to give the community real ownership,” Wayne tweeted. “He listened to what we had to say today and assured he will and can get it done.”
