This Monday is starting off rather interesting. After what happened last week at the U.S. Capitol, we’ve learned to expect the unexpected at this point.

Just a short while ago, social media caught wind of the United States State Department website claiming that Donald Trump and Mike Pence’s terms would end tonight (Jan. 11) at 7:40 p.m. — just a little less than two weeks shy of Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, which is when their terms are officially supposed to end. Naturally, people were very confused by this surprising note. However, we’re now learning the truth behind the bizarre claim.

According to Buzzfeed News, a disgruntled employee was actually behind it. When screenshots of the page started making its round on social media, we noticed that it was taken down, which continued to puzzle us. But now, it’s all making sense. The State Department doesn’t know who exactly is behind the message at this time, so now a full internal investigation is underway.

“One of the diplomats said that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has ordered an internal investigation into the matter, beginning with interns and employees leaving the State Department this week and next ahead of the transition to the Biden administration,” the news outlet reports.

This employee isn’t the only person who wants Trump gone. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Democrats on Sunday (Jan. 10) that the House will move forward with Trump’s impeachment proceedings if Vice President Mike Pence doesn’t invoke the 25th amendment and make the deadline to remove the current president himself.

A number of other politicians have voiced that Trump should be removed from office immediately after inciting his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol last week in an attempt to stop President-elect Joe Biden’s election win.

Former President Barack Obama also wants this to happen immediately. In a lengthy message in response to the riots, he wrote: “History will rightly remember today’s violence at the Capitol, incited by a sitting president who has continued to baselessly lie about the outcome of a lawful election, as a moment of great dishonor and shame for our nation.

“Republican leaders have a choice made clear in the desecrated chambers of democracy,” he said. “They can continue down this road and keep stoking the raging fires. Or they can choose reality and take the first steps toward extinguishing the flames. They can choose America.”
