Trump supporters clashed with police during protests in Washington, D.C. last night (Jan. 5). Demonstrations are expected to continue today (Jan. 6) in the nation’s capital as Congress is set to certify Joe Biden’s presidential victory this afternoon.

Slate reports that six people were arrested during the demonstrations after violent fights broke out between Trump supporters and police. Footage from the protests on social media showed protesters confronting police near the city’s Black Lives Matter Plaza, where officers had been standing in a protective line.

Videos showed pro-Trump protesters charging at the line and pushing and punching officers. Police responded by using pepper spray to control the crowd. According to the Washington, D.C. Fire and EMS Department, one woman at the event and two police officers were sent to the hospital after the struggle. The six people who were arrested were reportedly detained on assaulting police officers and weapons charges.

City officials have been preparing for protests this week ahead of Congress’ certification of the Electoral College votes. On Tuesday, the National Guard was deployed at the request of Mayor Muriel Bowser, and new signs were placed around the city to remind protesters that guns are not allowed at rallies.

Yesterday, a judge also ordered that Proud Boys leader Henry “Enrique” Tarrio stay away from D.C. until his next court appearance, which is scheduled for June 8. As reported by REVOLT, Tarrio was arrested on Monday (Jan. 4) in connection with the destruction of a church’s Black Lives Matter banner, which occurred during a pro-Trump protest in the city last month.

Tarrio was released from jail without bond yesterday and pleaded not guilty to his felony and misdemeanor charges. The 36-year-old faces destruction of property charges for setting the banner on fire and also weapons charges after he was found with two high-capacity firearm magazines.
