The Michigan State Police Department is conducting an investigation into the violent arrest of a 25-year-old Black man at the hands of several police.

On Nov. 10, bystander Brandon Hayduk was on his way to the store when he noticed an officer instructing an unidentified Black man to get into his patrol car. The situation escalated while he was inside of the store, and he walked to see the man in a physical altercation with not only the male cop, but another woman officer. He pulled out his phone as more officers were called to the scene and started recording the incident from across the street.

Per the nearly four-minute video later posted on Facebook, several officers roughly pinned the 25-year-old against the wall and threw him to the ground before ordering him to get on his back. They held him down and punched him in the head multiple times, prompting cries from the man and Hayduk.

“Why are you hitting me?” the man asked, while Hayduk begged, “Please don’t kill him.”

The Lansing police — who were responding to reports of a fight — reportedly identified the Black man as the primary suspect in the assault, but he maintained his innocence.

I didn’t do it!” the man told an officer who is then heard saying, “I don’t fucking care, just give me your hands now!”

As the unidentified man continued to resist his arrest, officers tased him, striking him a few times. At one point, he told cops that he couldn’t breathe. “George Floyd! George Floyd! Black Lives Matter,” he screamed as he was pinned to the ground.

The video ends abruptly shortly after an officer is heard ordering Hayduk to “get out of here.”

Following the arrest, the Black man was taken to a hospital for an evaluation — as required in arrests where individuals are tased — cleared and detained in a detention center.

One cop has been placed on administrative leave, while an Internal Affairs investigation is underway to look into the actions of the other officers involved.
