It’s been 17 years since 50 Cent’s “Many Men” was released, but the single was recently named Spotify’s most influential song of 2020. During an interview with Spotify’s Head of Urban Music Carl Chery, the Get Rich or Die Tryin’ star didn’t appear to be surprised by the honor. In fact, he explained why he believes the song resonates with the younger generation.

“Because they made it that for me. The younger artists doing it over, they made it that,” he said. “It’s because they feel the same way.”

Since “Many Men” dropped in 2003, Metro Boomin mixed the record for 21 Savage’s version of the record. Pop Smoke also sampled the single in “Got It On Me” which features the “Power” star himself.

“You can’t make a person decide to write a song that’s influenced by a song. Creative[ly], it’s just them going, ‘You know what? This is how I feel right now.’ The energy and the tones of what’s going on match the record,” he continued. “Whether you’re addressing another artist, like ‘cause in 21 Savage’s piece, he dealt with some not so good feelings he had toward Jeezy. Pop didn’t even use the title in it. The melodies is what struck the chord in him.”

“Many Men,” 50 explained, is the slowest track on Get Rich or Die Tryin’, but it “fits production-wise now.” “Musically now, things are slower. They like rapping to R&B beats. So, it provides more space for them to make changes in the cadences,” he said, adding his belief that artists will also be inspired by other songs from his discography.

This month has proved to be a great one for 50 as “The Woo” — his collaboration with the late Pop Smoke and Roddy Ricch — made its way to the No. 1 spot on urban radio. Yesterday (Nov. 9) also marked the 15-year anniversary of the Get Rich or Die Tryin’ film, which was loosely based on his life.
