Joe Biden is remaining optimistic about his chances of becoming president. The former vice president addressed the nation in a primetime speech on Friday (Nov. 6) night from the Chase Center in Wilmington, Delaware, to discuss the latest updates on the United States presidential election. Although the counting of votes in key states still continues, Biden and his campaign are now certain they are going to win the race.

With his running-mate Sen. Kamala Harris by his side, Biden opened his speech by addressing the voting updates that helped him pull ahead of President Donald Trump in the U.S. Presidential election in states like Pennsylvania and Georgia and in Nevada, where his lead has doubled as of Friday. A win in Georgia or Pennsylvania would put him over the electoral vote threshold required to win the presidency.

A record number of Americans voted during this election, reportedly around 150 million people participated, and Biden believes the majority of the votes will be in his favor. “We don’t have a final declaration of victory yet, but the numbers tell us a clear and convincing story: We’re going to win this race,” he said Friday. “Just look at what has happened since yesterday. In twenty four hours we were behind Georgia, now we’re ahead, and we’re going to win that state. Twenty four hours ago we were behind in Pennsylvania, and we are going to win Pennsylvania. And now we’re ahead but we’re winning in Arizona, we’re winning in Nevada. In fact, our lead just doubled in Nevada.”

“If you look at the national numbers, we’re going to win this race with a clear majority, with the nation behind us. We’ve gotten over 74 million votes,” he continued. “That’s more than any presidential ticket has ever gotten in the history of the United States of America.”

All the votes aren’t in yet but the former vice president said his ticket is beating Trump by 4 million votes, thanks to leads in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, which all voted for Trump in 2016.

“One of the things I’m especially proud of is how well we’ve done across America,” Biden added. “We’ve rebuilt the ‘blue wall’ in the middle of the country that crumbled just four years ago.”

Biden says he and Harris will hit the ground running once they are declared the winners, taking direct action against COVID-19, the economy and systemic racism. “I’ve never been more optimistic about the future of this nation. There is no reason we can’t own the 21st century,” he said, concluding his speech. “We just need to remember who we are.”

Trump has been fighting back in key swing states, attempting to disqualify certain ballots. Two lawsuits filed by the president’s campaign to stop the counting of ballots were thrown out on Thursday (Nov. 5).
