On Friday (Nov. 6), Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney held a press conference to give an update on vote counting in the city and he took time to respond to Donald Trump’s remarks about the election being stolen from him.

“What the president needs to do, frankly, is put his big boy pants on,” Kenney said. “He needs to acknowledge that he lost. And he needs to congratulate the winner.”

“I doubt he’ll listen to me, but that’s my feeling,” the mayor added.

On Thursday (Nov. 5), Trump claimed the election was being stolen from him — without providing any evidence to support those claims. He said that the mail-in voting system was “corrupt” and “rigged.” He also promised his supporters that he would pursue all legal options to challenge the election results in states such as Pennsylvania and Georgia.

Kenney said the president does not have evidence of voter fraud. “While some, including the president, continue to spew baseless claims of fraud — claims for which his team has not produced one iota of evidence — what we have seen here in Philadelphia is democracy, pure and simple,” he said.

He continued, “Our Founding Fathers, who conceived this system just a 15-minute walk down the street, I know would be proud. Two hundred thirty-three years after the Constitutional Convention, we stand at this convention center and proclaim the system still works. The people have spoken. And God-willing, we will have a peaceful transition of power in January.”

Democratic nominee Joe Biden is currently leading the president in votes in Pennsylvania. Shortly after Trump lost the lead in the Keystone State, his administration released a statement saying the election was far from over.

“This election is not over. The false projection of Joe Biden as the winner is based on results in four states that are far from final,” said Matt Morgan, Trump’s campaign general counsel.
