“Black Mask” marks the first officially released collaboration between Jay Gwuapo and late rapper Pop Smoke. The song was leaked back on May 21 but was announced on last week in an Instagram post that it was officially making its way to fans’ ears. On the song, Gwuapo raps about
“He can get left in the past if he talk out his ass, he get turned to a throwback. I got some shooters that blast if they see. I pull up with a black mask, I got some shooters that park up and hit and they go for a big bag. He tryna talk like he with it, but he showin’ different, it turn to a toe tag. He can get left in the past if he talk out his ass, he get turned to a throwback. I got some shooters that blast if they see. You say ‘Who made the beat?’ don’t be a fool.”
Jay Gwuapo’s last full length project was 2019’s From Nothing Pt. 1, which saw features from Lil Tjay, Don Q, Calboy, and Kj Bella. The world continues to miss the late Pop Smoke as we continue to bump his last release, Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon. Since it dropped, the album has earned the Brooklyn star a number one on the Billboard 200 thanks to 251,000 album equivalent units being sold during its first week out. In addition to peaking on several others charts around the world, Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon has also scored several plaques for the late rapper — including a Platinum certification in the United States.
In a recent interview, Jay Gwuapo spoke about the memories he has with Pop:
“We were about 15 when we first met. We used to just be at the YMCA playing basketball and shit. Pop didn’t come up rapping until I was rapping, He’d always tell everybody he started rapping cause he’d seen me rapping, and he seen it was working. Pop didn’t decide he really wanted to [pursue rap professionally] until about 2017-2018 when he was in school. He started rapping and that’s when he broke that Brooklyn Drill sound and now everybody f**k with it.”
