Footage of a Black woman talking to Kansas City police has gone viral.

Keiajah “KJ” Brooks — alongside fellow activists — interrupted a meeting between the Kansas City Board of Commissioners on Tuesday (Oct. 27) and demanded that Police Chief Rick Smith resign for his mismanagement of complaints related to the excessive force and fatal shootings of Black men. Upon taking the mic, she brutally shared her intentions to condemn the department.

“Fair warning, I’m not nice and I don’t seek to be respectable,” she began. “I’m not asking y’all for anything because y’all can’t and won’t be both my savior and my oppressor. I don’t want reform. I want to turn this building into luxury low-cost housing. These would make some really nice apartments.”

“So, I’m not here begging anything of soulless white folks and self-preserving Black folks,” she continued. “You get one life, and you all in this room have chosen profits over people. And that’s pathetic. So, I’m going to spend the next two minutes reading y’all for filth, something I’m sure nobody has ever done.”

Brooks then proceeded to individually address the members of the board. She referred to one as a “rich and white,” “disconnected” and “out-of-touch person with nothing but pure apathy seeping through the veins of your paper-colored skin.” She said another “exudes white privilege,” adding a third person was “subjecting Black people to terrorism and un-Christ-like behavior.”

In regards to Smith, Brooks said he has blood on his hands. “While these idiots hold you on a pedestal, God does not honor injustice and murder,” she continued.

KJ closed with a Bible verse dedicated to the “soulless, profit-driven, avaricious, greedy, God-forsaken” police commissioners, noting Jesus Christ was “another unarmed Black man murdered by authorities.”

“What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” she said, quoting Mark 8:36.

The video of Brooks quickly spread through social media as people praised her for courage and blunt messages to the police board.
