A Black woman whose boyfriend was fatally shot by a Waukegan, Illinois police officer is now speaking out from her hospital bed as she recovers from being shot during the incident.

According to ABC 7 Chicago, Tafara Williams is demanding answers after her 19-year-old boyfriend, Marcellis Stinnette, was killed by a police officer on Tuesday night (Oct. 20) as the couple was in their car. Williams, who was driving the vehicle, is currently hospitalized as she recovers from serious injuries. She was shot in her stomach and hand.

“Why did you shoot? I didn’t do nothing wrong. I have a license. You didn’t tell me I was under arrest. Why did you just flame up my car like that? Why did you shoot?,” Williams asked.

According to Waukegan Police Commander Edgar Navarro, the officer approached a “suspicious” vehicle. As the cop conducted his investigation, the car fled and was found moments later by another officer — who got out of his patrol car to approach the vehicle.

“A second officer located the vehicle in the area of MLK and South Street,” he said. “The officer exited the vehicle and the vehicle that he was investigating then began to reverse. The officer fired into the vehicle.”

The cop, who is Hispanic and a 5-year veteran of the department, was reportedly “in fear for his safety” at the time of the shooting. No weapons were found in the vehicle Stinnette and Williams were in.

Witnesses are telling a different story than authorities. “The police officer got out of the car. When he told them to stop, he told her to stop. She was scared. She put her up hands, she started yelling, ‘Why you got a gun?’ She started screaming. He just started shooting,” said Darrell Mosier, who saw the incident unfold.

“I heard the girl,” he added. “Her hands went up. She said, ‘I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it. I didn’t mean it. I didn’t try to run you over. We got no guns or nothing.’”

Illinois State Police’s Public Integrity Task Force is currently investigating the shooting. The Waukegan Police Department has turned over all evidence in the case — including reports, bodycam and dashcam videos.
