Meek Mill confirms he’s dropping an album before the end of the year

The rapper updated fans on his ‘Championships’ follow-up.

Two years ago, Meek Mill released his Grammy-nominated fourth studio album, Championships. Now, it looks like the record’s follow-up could be just around corner.

On Tuesday (Oct. 20), Meek hopped on Twitter to reply to one fan who asked for an update regarding his next project. “When the album dropping?” the fan wrote.

“This year lol,” the Philadelphia native replied.

Meek has stayed relatively quiet on the music front these past few months, only dropping his “Type Beat” freestyle last month and “Other Side Of America” — his single aimed at racial inequality — amidst police brutality protests this June.

The rapper has instead been dedicating himself to social justice efforts this year, mainly through his and JAY-Z’s REFORM Alliance and other legislative initiatives. REFORM recently celebrated the successful passage of Assembly Bill 1950, which California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law last month. The legislation makes significant strides in probation reform, including shortening probation terms in the state.

“I want to thank Governor Newsom for his leadership in signing AB1950 — the most transformative probation bill in this country to date,” JAY said in a statement at the time. “This is a first step that I hope introduces a wave of much needed change throughout the country.”

Meek was also involved — along with several other celebrities — in calling for the end of New York’s Statute 50-A, which allowed police officers to hide their misconduct records from the public. The efforts were successful, as New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo repealed the controversial statute this June.

Although Twitter users were happy by Meek’s announcement, his album isn’t the only one they’re anticipating before the end of the year. Hip hop fans are also waiting patiently for Drake’s sixth studio LP, which he previously said would arrive this summer. The Toronto rap-star has also recently pressed Meek about releasing new music, specifically encouraging him to drop a new single titled “Pain Away,” which is rumored to feature A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Roddy Ricch. Drake and Meek last worked together on Championships’ “Going Bad.”
