Whoopi Goldberg says she’s “working diligently” to make ‘Sister Act 3’ happen
“For a long time, they kept saying no one wanted to see it, and then quite recently, it turns out that may not be true,” Whoopi Goldberg said.
Sister Act fans who have been longing for a Sister Act 3 may be happy to know Whoopi Goldberg is “working diligently” to make it happen. The actress, who plays Deloris Van Cartier in the movie and its sequel, revealed the news during an appearance on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” on Tuesday night (Oct. 6).
When asked why a third installment of Sister Act has never come to fruition, Goldberg replied, “For a long time, they kept saying no one wanted to see it, and then quite recently, it turns out that may not be true. People may want to see it. So, we’re working diligently to try to figure out how to get the gang together and come back.”
Goldberg didn’t say much else about the potential movie, but is certain viewers would enjoy whatever is to come.
“It’s fun and it feels good, and you know, nobody’s mad. It’s just like listen, bad singing, great singing, okay singing and then nuns,” she said. “What’s better than that?”
The 1992 film Sister Act follows Goldberg’s character Deloris, a Las Vegas lounge singer who is forced to join a convent after being placed in a witness protection program to stay away from a pimp/murderer. In the 1993 sequel Sister Act 2: Back In the Habit, Deloris is approached by her nun friends who reveal they are teachers at her old school. They beg her to reprise her persona as Sister Mary Clarence and join them as a music teacher in hopes that the school’s reputation will improve and prevent it from closing down.
The films earned over $230 million and $57 million at the box office, respectively. Though the second film grossed less in comparison to the first, the rendition of “Oh Happy Day” sung by Sister Clarence’s choir has since been emulated in many churches.
