Although Pop Smoke is no longer with us, his peers, collaborators, fans, and family make sure the late NYC rapper’s legacy lives on. The newest offering from his last project just arrived, as Lil Tjay holds it down for their collab track for a new “Mood Swings” video, which is a sure fan favorite off of Pop Smoke’s 2020 album Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon. In the visual, Lil Tjay and his girlfriend Lala go back and forth in their volatile relationship, being fine one moment then feuding in the next.
On “Mood Swings,” Pop Smoke’s verse, he raps to his lady about how he’ll spoil her:
“She a queen, like Nefertiti, my lil’ mama sittin’ pretty. And we be shoppin’ through the city, I gave her keys to the Bentley. Get off your knees, you don’t gotta cry to me. I’m your best friend, baby, you don’t gotta lie. I’ll get you everything that you want and that you need from Chanel to Celine.”
The two New York rappers have an extensive history of collaborations and worked together on the multiple songs. In 2019, Lil Tjay assisted on Pop’s “War”, and then the following year on “Mannequin.” Pop returned the favor by hopping on Tjay’s “Zoo York.” In August, Pop Smoke’s album went on to receive a platinum certification.
In one of Pop Smoke’s final editorial interviews, he delved into the importance of balance:
“It’s all about balance. Sometimes shit gets overwhelming if you have too much of something. You gotta beware, because the decisions you make today will determine your future. N****s is having money now. I grabbed the hood first. I got the hood on my back, and n****s is rocking with me. Now it’s time to grab the attention of these females all over the world. I want to be that n****a to them. That’s how you keep everything balanced.”
