A Louisiana police officer was arrested, charged and placed on administrative leave after he falsely claimed that he was shot during an “ambush” while he was on duty.

According to CNN, 25-year-old John Michael Goulart Jr. was taken into custody on Tuesday (Sep. 22) and charged with one count of malfeasance in office and one count of criminal mischief for falsely claiming he was shot by someone else.

Deputy Chief Darrell B. Basco revealed details about the shooting in a statement. “There were shots fired at the officer,” the statement read. “The officer didn’t return fire on anybody. He was exiting the patrol vehicle at the shopping center whenever he was ambushed by an unknown person at this time and two shots were fired. One striking him, and the other hit the vehicle.”

“The investigation led to a determination that the officer shot himself, concealed and altered the facts,” Basco added.

On Sunday night (Sep. 20) around midnight, Goulart reported that he had been shot. He was transferred to a local hospital where he was treated and released. Basco says that two rounds were fired from his gun during the incident. One bullet hit Goulart in the leg and the other hit his car door. “Everything shows it was an accidental discharge,” Basco said.

The deputy added that all accidental discharges have to be reviewed by the chief of police and those involved can face disciplinary action, if needed. The counts against Goulart are similar to those someone would receive if they filed a false police report.

Goulart was arrested and taken into custody at the Rapides Parish Detention Center. He posted a $10,500 bond and was released from the detention center less than an hour after he was booked. As of Thursday (Sep. 24), Goulart remained on administrative leave from the police department.
