Three more Louisville officers under investigation for Breonna Taylor’s death
A new internal investigation names three more officers who were present during the deadly March raid.
Three more Louisville Metro Police officers are under an internal investigation for the March raid that resulted in Breonna Taylor’s death. On Monday (Sept. 21), the police department confirmed that its Professional Standards Unit is investigating Tony James, Michael Campbell and Michael Nobles, who were at Taylor’s apartment during the deadly raid.
The investigation also names Myles Cosgrove and Jonathan Mattingly, who fired their weapons and are awaiting possible criminal charges, and Detective Joshua Jaynes, who applied for the “no-knock” search warrant. The investigation is separate from the department’s Public Integrity Unit review, which delivers its findings to the Kentucky attorney general in the case of criminal charges.
According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, officer Campbell is a member of the Place-Based Investigations Squad that conducted the investigation that led to Taylor’s home raid. Nobles and James were members of the department’s Interdiction Squad.
James is also the officer who — photo evidence recently revealed — was wearing a body camera the night of the raid. Former LMPD Chief Steve Conrad had claimed there was no body camera footage from the incident and that officers in the narcotics division did not wear cameras. However, photos from the night of the raid released earlier this month showed that James was wearing a camera and Cosgrove was wearing a camera holster. It’s unclear whether or not James’ camera was turned on.
Brett Hankison, who is left out of the new investigation, was fired from the police department back in June. Cosgrove, Mattingly and Jaynes, who was not present for the raid, have since been placed on administrate reassignment.
News of the Professional Standards Unit probe arrives as the nation waits for Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron to announce the grand jury’s decision in Taylor’s case. LMPD officers barricaded areas of downtown Louisville on Tuesday morning (Sept. 22) after declaring a state of emergency in preparation for the decision. Cameron has not said when he will announce whether or not charges will be brought against Hankison, Cosgrove and Mattingly.
