Every successful Verzuz battle is followed by a deliberation meant to determine what two highly accomplished legends in the music industry would possibly be a great matchup. After Swizz Beatz turned down the idea of Missy Elliott going head to head with Janet Jackson, he came forth and clarified his statement to lesson the misinterpretation spreading across social media.
Following the celebration between iconic stars Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle on Sunday (Sept. 13) night, a clip of a previous conversation between Verzuz creators Swizz Beatz and Timbaland resurfaced where they were throwing out ideas for a future battle.
“The celebration is gon’ be great,” Timbaland said in an attempt to convince Swizz. “Missy gon’ wanna celebrate with somebody of her caliber that she knows that it’s gon’ be a great celebration. I know my sister. I know her.”
Jackson fans took offense to the super producer’s statement, slammed him for suggesting she was not as diverse as Elliott and made references to her discography that helped to refute his statement. Swizz eventually chimed in on the conversation to clear his name amid all the backlash.
“Janet got hits on hits, but she should have a better person to celebrate with…that’s all. Blessings,” he continued.
Since the beginning of quarantine, Swizz and Timbaland have managed to put together amazing moments that bring some down memory lane while serving as a history lesson to others. Verzuz fans have been able to see Brandy compete against Monica, Beenie Man dance along with Bounty Killa and Alicia Keys play keys alongside John Legend.
Who do you think would be a great contender for Missy Elliott?
