Police in Lancaster, Pennsylvania shot and killed a man on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 13) while responding to a domestic disturbance call. According to the Lancaster City Bureau of Police, an officer responded to a call from a woman at 4:15 pm, who said that her brother — 27-year-old Ricardo Munoz — was becoming aggressive with their mother and was trying to break into her house.

Body camera footage released on Monday (Sept. 14) showed a woman running out of the house while Munoz could be heard yelling inside. Munoz then emerges from the house and appears to be carrying a knife. The officer shoots the man, who collapses to the ground.

The district attorney’s office has opened an investigation into the incident to determine whether or not the cop’s use of force in the situation was justified. The officer involved — who has remained unidentified — has been placed on leave.

“This has been a heartbreaking day for our city,” Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace said in a statement. “I grieve for the loss of life and know that there are more questions to be answered as the investigation continues.”

Hundreds of peoples assembled in protest outside of the police station on Sunday night and eyewitness accounts say protests continued through Monday morning. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets against crowds and reportedly made several arrests.

“A police-involved shooting has significant impact on a community, as we are seeing with the large number of individuals gathering in the streets,” District Attorney Heather Adams said on Sunday night.

“We ask that acts of protest remain peaceful as violence and destruction of property will become headlines and serve no purpose for the safety and wellbeing of our citizens and neighborhoods.”
