A couple of weeks ago, Warner Music Group made the announcement that it purchased a company called IMGN Media. This company is known for making many of the hilarious memes and viral videos that social media users see on Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. With this news, a surprising revelation occurred that is leaving many in disbelief.
Through this sale, the public is now learning that the owner of the widely popular IG account Daquan, which has over 15 million followers, isn’t owned by the Black man. Instead, it’s ran by IMGN’s co-founder and CEO Barak Shragai. This is shocking to know considering a few factors. One: The name of the person/account, Daquan; and two: The posts that cater to the Black audience being that they are of Black people 99% of the time.
Though some may have already known of this ownership from a 2016 article from The Daily Beast, millions of people — Black people in particular — are now discovering this. While many have found the news to be funny, there are many others who are uncomfortable by the revelation. To them, this is just another sad case of “digital blackface,” a practice that non-Black people on social media perform when they make themselves look and sound Black, as a way to have people believe they actually are.
“You mfs online f****** love to cosplay as Black people,” one upset Instagram user wrote about the reveal that the Daquan account owner isn’t Black. “This sh** is sick as hell man… He bought the account from a Canadian Black teenager in 2016 and never changed the pages name or profile picture bc he didn’t want anyone to know the account changed hands #digitalblackface.”
We can’t help but wonder, however, how did the popular account become verified if the owner isn’t actually named Daquan. You have to show I.D. for IG verification to prove you’re the same person your account says you are. This is all very odd…
