Monica and Brandy’s Verzuz broke all of the series’ previous records
The R&B queens’ virtual celebration will go down in Verzuz history.
We already knew that Monica and Brandy’s Verzuz battle was legendary, but now the virtual series has delivered the stats to prove it. On Tuesday (Sept. 1), the official Verzuz Twitter confirmed that Brandy and Monica’s showdown surpassed all of the previous records in the series’ history.
“More than 6 MILLION viewers tuned in across Instagram and Apple Music to watch [Brandy] and [Monica] celebrate each other,” one tweet read. “They broke all #VERZUZ records and more.”
According to the Twitter thread, over 1,243,000 viewers were watching the battle on Instagram at the same time. The event caught the attention of over 4,200,000 Instagram users and garnered over 100,000,000 likes. Plus, over 1.6 million people watched the showdown on Apple Music.
On Twitter, the R&B duo were the No. 1 trending topic and over 1,000,000 tweets were sent about the battle. To put that number in perspective, there were more tweets about Monday night’s showdown (Aug. 31) than there were about the VMAs.
Furthermore, Monica and Brandy also used their Verzuz to encourage voter registration, and it looks like they were successful. According to the thread, over $250,000 were raised for Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote organization and more than 35,000 people clicked on the virtual link to sign up to vote.
Brandy and Monica’s Verzuz was one for the books. The two stars paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman, Nipsey Hussle, Kobe Bryant and other late legends, as well as victims of police brutality. They debuted new singles, had surprise guests, addressed their former beef and ultimately celebrated each other’s achievements and stature in the music game.
“I understand the idea of [Verzuz] and I think it’s really, really entertaining and it is an incredible idea. Now what I do like is, it’s kind of turning into a celebration. I can handle a celebration,” Monica told V103 back when she was toying with the idea of a Verzuz against Brandy. “One thing that has happened to me my whole career is being put against someone else that I’m not even remotely similar to. I think the reality is, us being polar opposites makes it dope.”
