R. Kelly was attacked by a fellow inmate at the Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center on Wednesday (Aug. 26), Fox 32 Chicago reports. According to Kelly’s attorney Steven Greenberg, the embattled R&B singer was sitting on his bed inside his cell when another inmate walked in and started punching him.

Apparently, TMZ reports, the inmate was angry because the detention center has been placed on lockdown a few times due to people protesting Kelly outside of the facility. The altercation reportedly did not last long and was broken up by either a prison guard or another inmate.

Greenberg told Fox 32 that the federal prison had not let yet him know the extent of Kelly’s injuries, but TMZ reports neither party was seriously harmed during the fight.

Kelly turned himself into the Cook County Jail last year. The singer has pleaded not guilty to a multitude of state and federal sexual misconduct and other charges in Illinois, Minnesota and New York.

Earlier this month, federal prosecutors discovered that Kelly had opened a private bank account, which he’s used to control his finances and royalties from prison. The account has accumulated over $1.2 million since last March.

The bank account contradicted Kelly’s attorneys’ previous claims that he did not have the funds to escape from prison and was not a flight risk. An investigation is currently underway to determine if the money has already been used to avoid financial penalties or bribe individuals related to the case. Three of Kelly’s associates have already been charged for threatening his alleged victims to keep them from speaking out against him.

The news followed Greenberg’s attempt to have Kelly removed from prison due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Regardless, it is time to release Mr. Kelly,” he wrote Fox 32 in an email. ”The government cannot ensure his safety, and they cannot give him his day in court. We should not incarcerate people indefinitely because we cannot provide them with due process.”
