The Charlotte Hornets have indefinitely suspended radio play-by-play announcer John Focke after he tweeted the N-word. He was reportedly trying to spell the word “Nuggets” instead.

“Shot making in this Jazz-N*ggers game is awesome! Murray and Mitchell going back and forth what a game!” Focke’s original tweet read.

On Monday night (Aug. 17), Focke apologized. “Earlier today I made a horrific error while attempting to tweet about the Denver-Utah game,” he tweeted. “I don’t know how I mistyped, I had (and have) no intention of ever using that word. I take full responsibility for my actions. I have been sick to my stomach about it ever since. I’m truly sorry that this happened and I apologize to those I offended.”

The Observer contacted Focke via text on Monday night for a statement, but he said that he did not have any additional comments. Social media users made it known that they did not accept his apology.

Twitter user @ThunderBookman tweeted, “Nah it took him some time later and some backlash to issue an apology. And the only way that word could have been used, is if he pre-loaded it or he spelled it all the way out. Bc when I type in the ‘N-word’ it pulls up Nigeria.. so that’s bs….”

“John, I’m trying to understand & I’ve been sick to my stomach since I saw your tweet,” tweeted @cecelewis8. “How do you mistype that word? If auto correct kicked in, that tells me you use that word often. I really hoped you had been hacked.” She also shared a screenshot of what her autocorrect looks like when she types “Nugg.”

The Hornets tweeted that they have suspended him indefinitely as they investigate the matter. “The Charlotte Hornets are aware of the recent social media post by radio broadcaster John Focke. As an organization, we do not condone this type of language,” the Hornets said in a statement via Twitter. “John has been suspended indefinitely as we investigate the matter more closely.”
