Kentucky attorney general meets with family of Breonna Taylor
“We let him know how important it was for their office to get all the facts, to get the truth and to get justice for Breonna,” Tamika Palmer said.
The Kentucky attorney general met with the family of the late Breonna Taylor on Wednesday morning (Aug. 12), according to his office.
Attorney General Daniel Cameron met with Taylor’s sister, aunt and mother Tamika Palmer. The family’s attorneys and activist Christopher 2X were also included in the meeting. Not much is known about the details of the assembly, but Cameron did reportedly give his condolences to the family and told them that the investigation is ongoing.
After the meeting, Palmer shared a statement to WAVE 3 News. “I’m glad the attorney general asked for this meeting,” she said. “He actually seemed sincere and genuine, which I appreciated. We let him know how important it was for their office to get all the facts, to get the truth and to get justice for Breonna. We all deserve to know the whole truth behind what happened to my daughter. The attorney general committed to getting us the truth. We’re going to hold him up to that commitment.”
She continued, “At the end of the day, we have to bridge the community and the police. That starts with the truth and justice. And we have to make real changes to keep this from happening to anyone else. The attorney general didn’t say which direction he’s pointing to, and I could be wrong, but after meeting him today I’m more confident that the truth will come out and that justice will be served.”
Back in March, Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT, was shot and killed after cops entered her home under a “no-knock” warrant. She was in bed with her boyfriend when the officers powered through her door. Her boyfriend fired a warning shot — after believing that the officers were intruders. They returned fire and Taylor was shot multiple times. She died shortly after.
Since her death, protests have erupted throughout Kentucky and multiple celebrities have brought national attention to her case. Oprah Winfrey recently purchased 26 billboards in Louisville to demand justice for Taylor. Players in the WNBA and NBA have used their platforms to speak out about her case during their 2020 seasons.
Beyoncé penned a letter to Cameron demanding that he arrest the three officers who were involved with Taylor’s death. She also asked that his office have complete transparency in the investigation, as well as an additional investigation into how the LMPD responded to her killing and any other practices that “result in the repeated deaths of unarmed Black citizens.”
