A 20-year-old Black man was found hanging in Morristown, New Jersey on June 28 and some believe his involvement exposing child predators could have played a role in his death, according to NewsOne.

Amani Kildea was found hanging an hour away from where he lived. He had a promising future ahead of him and had plans to attend James Madison University this fall and pursue a career in federal law enforcement. He dreamed of becoming an FBI or CIA agent.

Kildea was reportedly part of a social-media based group who exposed the names of alleged pedophiles. The group would lure sexual predators in by posing as an underage child. They would then expose the child predators by recording the encounters. An activist in Morristown says Kildea’s role in the group could’ve been a factor in his death.

“Amani’s work in the community to expose sexual predators was brave, but dangerous, leaving him vulnerable to retaliation from those criminals,” Black Lives Matter Morristown founder T’Anna Kimbrough said in a statement Friday (July 3).

“Despite Prosecutor Knapp’s assertion that there is ‘no cause to believe there is any criminality involved’ in his death by hanging, Amani’s work in the community sheds light on a possible motive to kill and silence him,” she continued.

Authorities are still investigating his death, but say that no evidence of a criminal act has been found. “As of this time, no evidence of a criminal act has yet been found, however, our efforts to determine what occurred remain very active,” Prosecutor Fredric Knapp said in a statement on Friday. “We have followed and continue to follow all investigative leads and will go where the evidence takes us.”

Almost 180,000 people have signed a petition demanding justice for Kildea. They believe that he did not kill himself and that his death was the result of an alleged hate crime. To sign the petition, click here.
