Yesterday (June 9), George Floyd was laid to rest in Houston, Texas. On that same day, Texas Southern University released a statement on Facebook announcing that they were offering his six-year-old daughter, Gianna, a full scholarship to attend their institution after she graduates from high school.

“The Board of Regents of Texas Southern University (TSU) honors the memory of George Floyd on the day that he is laid to eternal rest,” the historically Black university wrote. “Mr. Floyd was a lifelong citizen of the Third Ward and a revered graduate of Jack Yates High School.”

“The Board, in conjunction with the TSU Foundation Board, has approved a fund to provide a full scholarship for Floyd’s beloved daughter, Gianna,” the statement continued. “TSU’s executive and academic staff will prepare a place for Miss Floyd if she wishes to attend the University.”

Gerald Smith of the TSU Foundation said it was “found to provide this privately-funded scholarship” for Gianna. “We know the value of an education in the pursuit of solutions and operational progress,” he said in a statement. “We look forward to embracing her into the TSU family.”

Last week, Kanye West donated $2 million to the families of Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery. He also set up a 529 college savings fund to fully cover college tuition for Floyd’s daughter.

Gianna spoke to CBS Minnesota about happy memories she had with her dad. “I remember when he used to take me outside … and then I used to get on his back and he used to carry me on his back all the time,” she said. “It was super fun.”

Floyd died on May 25 after being restrained by Minneapolis police officers. Former officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes as Floyd yelled out that he couldn’t breathe. The entire incident was caught on video and has prompted protests around the world.
