Janet Jackson is speaking out against the recent police killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. On Sunday (June 7), the pop icon took to Twitter to share a stirring video that demands justice for Floyd and Taylor, while highlighting the countless victims of police brutality. Although Jackson doesn’t appear in the video, the clip opens with her reading a somber message in a low, monotone voice.

“We are a nation with no geographic boundaries, bound together through our beliefs,” Jackson says as her words appear on the screen. “We are like-minded individuals, sharing a common vision, pushing toward a world rid of color lines.”

In the background, a bell clangs eerily as Jackson’s words are replaced with a long list of names of African American men and women who have died at the hands of police. The video fades to dark with a message that reads “Black Lives Matter.” Finally, an image of Jackson wearing her Rhythm Nation outfit appears on the screen.

The Unbreakable singer captioned the clip with #SayTheirNames and #BlackLivesMatter. Although she rarely uses her social media for political activism, this new video follows a series of posts from Jackson in the wake of nationwide protests against police violence.

On Friday (June 5) — Breonna Taylor’s birthday — Jackson paid tribute to the late EMT with a tweet.

“SAY HER NAME Breonna Taylor’s 27th birthday is today,” Jackson wrote.

The Grammy Award-winning singer also urged her followers to take action in the cases of Floyd, Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery by texting their local representatives and demanding that each receive justice.

Numerous other artists have also spoken out against police violence in the past few weeks, with the likes of J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar joining protests, Drake and The Weeknd donating to bail assistance and Rihanna and Meek Mill petitioning politicians to make legislative changes.
