On May 23, Maurice Gordon was fatally shot by a New Jersey police trooper during a routine traffic stop.

Per Wall Street Journal, Gordon was stopped by a trooper for a speeding violation and was asked to pull over his vehicle to a different spot on the highway. The officer called for a tow truck after realizing that the 28-year-old’s car was unable to restart. The deputy eventually got physical with the former, shooting him multiple times.

According to Gordon’s family attorney William O. Wagstaff III, officials have remained tight-lipped regarding details on the case. “There’s so much wrong with the way police police people of color, and this is an example of that. You have a young man who had his whole life ahead of him who ended up dead, presumably, on the side of the Garden State Parkway for what should have been a routine traffic stop,” Wagstaff explained.

“I’m not going to hear his voice anymore,” Gordon’s mother Racquel Barrett said in a recent interview. “It really hurts. I don’t know if I’m ever going to get over this. And I’m really, really angry and upset with the police here. I don’t know how the law works here, but it feels like I’m fighting through a no man’s land. I’m just sitting here in a hotel room, crying.”

At the moment, the trooper’s name has not been released publicly. A spokeswoman for the office explained that it’s against policy to release videos prior to the completion of an investigation. Attorney General Gurbir Grewal also shared a similar sentiment about temporarily withholding video content. “I need to be able to interview witnesses based on what they saw, not what they saw in a video and then are repeating in a witness interview,” Grewal said.

The death of Gordon occurred two days before George Floyd, who was an unarmed black man that died in the hands of police custody in Minneapolis.
