A judge ruled that all three defendants who were charged with the murder of Ahmaud Arbery will stand trial, reports CBS News. Today (June 4), Judge Wallace Harrell found that there is enough evidence for the cases against Gregory McMichael, his son Travis and William Bryan to continue.

During the preliminary hearing, evidence showed that the three suspects boxed Arbery in with their two pickup trucks as he repeatedly tried to get away. As he laid on the ground dying, Travis reportedly called him a “fucking nigger.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Assistant Special Agent in Charge Richard Dial testified that there were numerous times that one of the McMichaels — he didn’t clarify which one — used the same racial slur. McMichael also once messaged someone saying that he loved his job because there “weren’t any niggers anywhere.”

Bryan also had several messages in his phone that included racial slurs which indicated that he may have had a prejudice against Arbery the day he was shot.

“There’s evidence of Mr. Bryan’s racist attitude in his communications, and from that I extrapolate the reason why he made assumptions he did that day,” Dial said. “He saw a man running down the road with a truck following him and I believe he made certain assumptions that were, at least in part, based upon his racial bias.”

Back in February, Arbery was fatally shot while jogging through a neighborhood near his home in Brunswick, Georgia. He jogged past Gregory, who then told his son Travis to get their guns. The father and son took their weapons and jumped into their truck to follow Arbery. Soon after, there was a struggle over the firearm and Arbery was shot and killed.

The two men weren’t arrested for his murder until May, after Bryan’s video footage surfaced. Eventually, Bryan was arrested for his involvement in the murder as well. All three defendants will remain in a Glynn County jail until another judge decides whether or not to allow them to go free on bond. We will keep you updated with the latest.
