Dr. Dre has a powerful message about police brutality in America. While speaking on Lil Wayne’s “Young Money Radio” podcast on Friday (May 29), the mega producer referenced George Floyd’s unfortunate death in which an ex-officer kneeled on the former’s neck for more than eight minutes in Minneapolis.
“It’s like, man, that situation, it hurt my heart. My heart is still aching,” Dr. Dre explained. “And it felt like that cop had his knee on all of our necks, meaning black men. And yeah, it’s extremely painful. It’s extremely painful because it keeps going on. It continues to go on and it’s like, ‘What can we do? Or what do we need to do to make this thing stop? What is supposed to happen to make this thing stop?’ It has to stop.”
“They’re supposed to be arrested and convicted of first-degree murder,” Dr. Dre said in reference to ex-officer Derek Chauvin, who was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. “Point blank, period. They’re supposed to be convicted of first-degree murder. And, the f—ked up part is they’re so brazen with it, broad daylight, with cameras on. And, he’s got his knee on this guy’s neck for that amount of time and he doesn’t give a f—k. His hand is in his pocket. He may as well have been whistling.”
Like Dr. Dre, many have spoken out about Floyd’s death in heartfelt posts shared to social media including Beyoncé, Miguel, Chance the Rapper and more.
Last week, Floyd’s family announced that they will conduct a separate autopsy, noting that they don’t trust the initial findings of the Minneapolis Police Department.
“We’re going to take custody back of George Floyd’s body and we’re bringing in Dr. Michael Baden to perform an independent autopsy because we saw in the Eric Garner case and so many other cases where they have these people who work with the city come up with things that are such an illusion,” Floyd’s family attorney Ben Crump said. “They’re going to have their own autopsy. We’re not going to rely on this DA or this city to tell us the truth. We already saw the truth.”
