Last year saw rising R&B star Lucky Daye reveal his debut album Painted, an album that earned rave review and award nominations, effectively putting Lucky on the map as the next singer to watch out for. This week, he returned with a new single titled “Shoulda,” which features background assistance from legendary artist-producer Babyface. The track also samples the Babyface-penned Tony Braxton classic “Love Shoulda Brought You Home”:

“I believed your lies, thought your heart was true, where was your heart last night when I needed you?/

Love shoulda brought your ass home last night, shoulda been with me, babe, holdin’ me tight/

So don’t be mad if your man isn’t home tonight, you shoulda brought that ass home, to me last night/

So you wanna do this, let’s take it from the top, top, top, thought a n***a could trust you, but obviously not, not, not…/”

Produced by D’Mile, “Shoulda” follows Lucky Daye’s 2019 loosies “Buying Time” and “Fly.” The song also follows a recent remix drop of the Painted album cut “Roll Some Mo,” which now features additional assistance from Chronixx and MediSun. Those behind the scenes also know Lucky for his incredible songwriting, having crafted dope cuts for the likes of Ne-Yo, Ella Mai, Trey Songz, and Mary J. Blige.

During an interview with The FADER, Lucky spoke on the important of releasing his aforementioned debut:

“I needed to get this album done and get it out of my system and let me know if this is my purpose or if I’ve just been wasting my time… I was scared because I didn’t know the ending, but it turned out to be something good.”
