Bishop Nehru drops ‘Nehruvia: My Disregarded Thoughts’ album
The NYC lyricist offers introspective boom bap and trap on his latest offering.
Bishop Nehru has been on his Nehruvia wave since 2012 and the latest installment, Nehruvia: My Disregarded Thoughts, landed today (May 8).
“In My Zone” and other tracks were previewed as part of the album of the day on Bandcamp ahead of the release. The song was featured on NBA 2K20 and it hits the hardest on that soundtrack. Nehru is a loner with a penchant for clever bars and catchy hooks.
“Glo’d up, had to get in my zone
No friends, I be chillin’ alone
Fuck nigga don’t be hittin’ my phone
Niggas fake, I can see they the clones
Don’t need ‘em, did it all on my own”
According to his profile on Bandcamp, the song and album are part of a concept the rapper had back in the middle school. “I knew I wanted to make a concept record about what it takes to free yourself from mental enslavement… The plan was to make something that showed real vulnerability and was, like, the polar opposite of masking how I felt,” he said.
“The introspective trap of ‘In My Zone’, which includes the boast: ‘I have no friends / I be chillin alone,’ promotes self-love and an inward-looking perspective at odds with the Instagram generation’s need for persistent external validation.”
The album follows his release from earlier this year, Nehruvian Tuesdays, Vol. 1 and 2018’s Nehruvia: A Nehruvian Holidays EP. Nehruvia: My Disregarded Thoughts is 13 tracks and is the rapper’s eighth album. It features a guest spot from DOOM on the song “MEATHEAD.” DJ Premier laced the beat on “Too Lost” with a cold Bun B scratch on the hook.
The rapper said about the project: “This music is about me growing older and changing, but actively embracing that shit. It’s a record about being alone with your thoughts, but learning how to create a world with your imagination that can be used to heal and move forward. If more black people were comfortable with their own shadow then the world would be a much better place.”
