Papoose and Remy Ma appeared for a virtual interview with “The Real,” where they discussed how COVID-19 has affected their friends and family. Tragically, Papoose revealed that he’s lost a cousin to Coronavirus and that his uncle has also passed away, due to not being able to receive the correct medical treatment amidst the pandemic.

“Unfortunately one of my cousins passed away [from] Coronavirus,” the Underrated rapper said. “My uncle passed away. He actually had another condition but he wasn’t feeling well [and] he went to the emergency room. Long story short, the hospitals are so focused on COVID-19 that people who have other issues, they’re not really catering to them. So, it was kind of a neglect thing, but you can’t really question God’s plan.”

“I’ve got tons of friends who actually have Coronavirus, so, it’s rampant,” Papoose continued. “It’s definitely hit home.”

Currently residing in New York City, both Remy and Papoose have seen the disproportionate responses and results of COVID-19 across socioeconomic and racial disparities. Remy pointed out that Coronavirus testing centers were first set up in primarily wealthy New York neighborhoods and that statistics have shown that African American people have died at larger rates from the virus.

“If you have any pre-existing conditions, that’s what really exacerbates [COVID-19] and a lot of people in the African American and Latino community don’t have good health care, don’t have a primary care [doctor], [and] they don’t even have the sense of going to the doctor,” she said.

“I know so many people that walk around with toothaches, headaches, stomach pains, until they can’t take it anymore and they have to go to the hospital, because they can’t afford it,” Remy continued. “[And] Black women, they don’t even take our pain seriously. We’re the most misdiagnosed and undiagnosed out of all the genres and sexes.”

“We just gotta stay safe and take care of our loves ones,” Papoose concluded.

Our hearts go out to Papoose’s entire family. See the couple’s full “The Real” interview below.
