Ice Cube celebrates the 25th anniversary of ‘Friday’

Ice Cube is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his hit film Friday. The film, directed by F. Gary Gray, was originally released in theaters on April 26, 1995 and secured $28.2 million at the box office.

The “It Was A Good Day” rapper posted a series of tweets acknowledging the film’s commemoration. Each tweet featured different scenes from the movie with the words “Happy anniversary” written above it. Cube made sure to honor the late John Witherspoon and Bernie Mac in a few of his posts as well.

In the movie, Craig Jones (Ice Cube) was fired from his job for stealing cardboard boxes. To make matters worse, his rent was due and he and his best friend Smokey (Chris Tucker) owed the neighborhood drug dealer money. Throughout the day, Craig and Smokey experienced the trials and tribulations of life in the hood.

Friday was followed up with Next Friday and Friday After Next. The fourth Friday franchise installment was supposed to be released this year, but the untimely death of Witherspoon put a halt on production.

Back in December, a fan asked if the film would be canceled due to the passing of Witherspoon. Cube replied, “Back to the drawing board since New Line Cinema was slow on green lighting the ‘LAST FRIDAY’ script that was full of Mr. Jones. I’ve been pissed off about it since Spoon passed away.”

TMZ caught up with the AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted rapper and asked if he considered using computer-generated imagery in the film in light of Witherspoon’s death. He responded, “It’s all on New Line, man.”

Friday also stars Nia Long, Regina King, Thomas Lister Jr., Anna Maria Horsford, Paula Jai Parker, Anthony Johnson, DJ Pooh and Faizon Love.
