Eminem is celebrating 12 years of sobriety

Eminem is celebrating 12 years of sobriety today (Apr. 20).

Royce da 5’9” took to Instagram to share to exciting news. “And counting…. Proud of my brother,” he wrote along with a photo of Em holding his sobriety coin.

The “Godzilla” rapper often spoke about his past issues with drugs. In a 2009 interview with Vibe magazine, the Detroit native opened up about his road to recovery.

“It’s no secret I had a drug problem,” he said. “If I was to give you a number of Vicodin I would actually take in a day? Anywhere between 10 to 20. Valium, Ambien, the numbers got so high I don’t even know what I was taking.”

In 2005, the Music To Be Murdered By rapper went to rehab to get treatment for an addiction to sleeping pills. Two years later, he nearly overdosed after a friend gave him unidentified pills, which he later found out were methadone.

“My doctor told me the amount of methadone I’d taken was equivalent to shooting up four bags of heroin,” Em said. “I probably wouldn’t have taken it, but as bad as I was back then, I can’t even say 100 percent for sure.”

After detoxing, he suffered a knee injury that required surgery. Because of his past drug abuse, he was not given pain killers.

“I started looking around my house to see if I had a stash box of Vicodin,” Em said. “I’m ransacking my house, finally find something in the basement, in a little napkin, seven and a half Vicodin — the big extra strength ones — and a few Valium.”

After suffering from another relapse, he finally accepted the fact that he had a drug addiction and checked himself into a 12-step program. He officially became sober on April 20, 2008.

Congratulations to Eminem on this huge accomplishment. We wish him many more years of sobriety. Check out Royce’s post below.
