Back in 2018, Atlanta-to-Los Angeles duo Chloe x Halle delivered their debut album The Kids Are Alright, which was released through Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment and saw additional assistance from GoldLink, Kari Faux, and Joey BADA$$. In addition, they’ve been making their mark on both the big and small screen, most recently becoming an integral part of the “Black-ish” spinoff show “Grown-ish.” Now, they make a return to the music with “Catch Up,” which features assistance from Rae Sremmurd’s Swae Lee and super-producer Mike WILL Made-It.

With additional production from Royal Z and Pluss, “Catch Up” was explained by Halle as being “a tit for tat love story… do something to one person they get you back. It’s a cycle that never ends.” The lyrics further show this in the way of mutual infidelity between the collaborators:

“I know you were at a hotel room, you’ve got her lipstick on your shirt, I’m no fool/

I’m quick to move on, don’t get it confused, I have a future with shit to lose/

You’re gonna lose me, so now I…/”

“Catch Up” is said to be taken from Chloe x Halle’s forthcoming sophomore release The Ungodly Hour, which — as they revealed to PopSugar — is an “edgier, grittier” statement from the duo as grown women:

“It’s more grown; it’s sexy, it’s darker… we’re not little kids anymore.”

Recently, Chloe x Halle collaborated with the World Health Organization and Global Citizen to create a social media concert, joining many of their peers in creating content for the quarantined crowd during the Coronavirus pandemic. During the session, they performed older hits like “Happy Without Me,” and “Cool People,” while also giving viewers a taste of the aforementioned Ungodly Hour project. Halle — who celebrated her 20th birthday last month — also gave fans a little update from the forthcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, which she had been filming in London prior to the outbreak.

You can press play on “Catch Up” below, which is available on your favorite streaming service.
