Netflix has shared the first official trailer for LA Originals. The upcoming documentary tells the story of how Los Angeles-bred photographer Estevan Oriol and artist and tattooist Mister Cartoon “turned their Chicano roots into gritty art, impacting street culture, hip hop and beyond,” along with featured interviews with their high-profile clients, including Snoop Dogg, Eminem and more.
Furthermore, a note on YouTube states the movie will provide “an exploration of the culture and landmarks of the Chicano and street art movement that cemented Mister Cartoon and Estevan Oriol’s status as behind-the-scenes hip hop legends.”
“If you ain’t get tatted by Cartoon, you ain’t got no tat,” Snoop says in the trailer’s opener. “If you ain’t got shot by Estevan, you got a weak photographer.”
As an accomplished hip hop tattoo artist, Mister Cartoon has tattooed the likes of Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Eminem, Method Man, Prodigy, Bow Wow, Beyonce, Kobe Bryant, Snoop Dogg, Redman and more. As an artist, he designed the logo for Cypress Hill and Em’s Shady Records. Mister Cartoon also appeared in the music videos for Xzibit’s “Criminal Set” and Eminem’s “Stan.”
Oriol, on the other hand, has photographed hip hop stars like Kendrick Lamar, Shady, 50 and more.
“Hip hop was new,” Oriol said in the clip. “I’m on tour with the Beastie Boys, No Doubt, the Fujis, Limp Bizkit. And I’m the only one there with a camera.”
From there, the Soul Assassins-affiliated pair went on to build their empire.
“The more we hung out, the more we just started building on ideas of things we could do to make money that weren’t illegal,” Mister Cartoon added.
Other celebrity appearances in the movie will include George Lopez, Terry Crews, Blink-182, Michelle Rodriguez, Wilmer Valderrama, Danny Trejo and more.
LA Originals is directed by Oriol and written by Brian Maya and Omar Quiroga. The film is set to arrive on Netflix on April 10. See the star-studded trailer below.
