Mulatto signs with RCA Records
From “The Rap Game” to signing a record deal with RCA, Mulatto is doing things on her own terms.
Mulatto has officially signed with RCA Records.
As the winner of “The Rap Game,” Mulatto turned down a deal with Jermaine Dupri and remained independent, releasing music and doing shows on her own accord.
“We’re excited to have Mulatto join the RCA family,” RCA chairman and CEO Peter Edge said in a press release. “She is a bright, talented young star who has already made incredible strides in her career. She is rapidly becoming a frontrunner amongst her peers and we’re looking forward to being a part of that process.”
Her breakout hit “Bitch From Da Souf,” earned her multiple recording contract offers, but ultimately she decided to side with RCA.
“The buzz that ‘Bitch From Da Souf’ created put so many offers on the table for me all at once,” she said. “I was in New York and L.A. having meetings back to back. RCA stood out off rip. The meeting didn’t feel like a meeting at all. Everybody from the interns to the CEO [Peter Edge] himself were there to meet me when I got there. We popped bottles, played new music and really just talked shit on a Friday night way after the office was already closed.”
“Signing was especially a big deal for me being that I came from a TV show where I publicly turned down a record deal,” she added. “For five years I worked independently waiting for the right opportunity to present itself. I knew in my heart that it was time and felt 100 percent confident in choosing RCA.”
The official music video for “Bitch From Da Souf” has garnered over 11.5 million views and counting, even before she released remix with Saweetie and Trina. She recently starred on Hitmaka’s all-female remix version of “Thot Box” alongside Dreezy, Dream Doll, Young MA, and Chinese Kitty.
In an interview with REVOLT, Mulatto talked about how the “Thot Box” collab came about. “Hitmaka hit me like, ‘I’m doing a ‘Thot Box’ remix, I want you on it,’” she said. “He pulled up to the studio and we did the hook. I heard everybody’s verses. I gave my input as far as where the hook should be at, and whose verse should be where. It was cool because it was a little deeper than ‘I’ll cut the hook for you, and that’s that.’ He actually included me in the process. That experience was super dope for me.”
