Following a major health scare last week, Kurtis Blow is now on the road to recovery. The 60-year-old hip hop pioneer revealed on Tuesday (March 17) that he’d recently been rushed to the emergency room following a near-fatal spleen rupture.

“The Covid 19 virus is crazy but last week I had another emergency surgery. My spleen was bleeding into my stomach,” he wrote on Instagram.

Thankfully, Kurtis’ wife urged him to go to the hospital immediately, which ultimately saved his life.

“I went to the ER just in time because my wife made me go. I wanted to go in the morning,” he continued. “The surgeon said I was lucky to make in time. They took out my spleen and saved my life. My spleen had splattered and I was bleeding internally.”

Kurtis’ ruptured spleen marks his second emergency surgery within the last year, following an emergency open-heart surgery last May. The hip hop forefather also suffered a life-threatening heart attack at his home in the Woodland Hills neighborhood in Los Angeles back in 2016.

“I am in recovery now and I thank God for the great physician and Dr Jamali. The great surgeon Dr Schriver and all the nurses and assistants at West Hills Hospital,” Kurtis concluded his post. “Thanks to my wife and fam for all your prayers. Thank God for still another chance. 7 operations. A Cat with 9 lives -Amen!!!!”

Back in December, the rap legend celebrated a $3.5 million capital grant from the state of New York, awarded to his co-founded Hip Hop Museum. The museum is set to open in the South Bronx in 2023 — hip hop’s 50th anniversary — and will serve as the first museum dedicated to hip hop music and culture.

“Our mission is to use technology of today to tell this story of the history of hip hop,” Kurtis told PIX11 News at the time. “We’re talking avatars and holograms and virtual reality, and another thing is interaction with the kids.”

We wish Kurtis a speedy full recovery.
