After dropping major hints earlier this month, 21 Savage and Metro Boomin released their project, Savage Mode 2, on Friday (March 13).

Last month, Metro shared a photo of himself and 21 in the studio cooking up new music. A few weeks later, 21 reposted an Instagram Story from a fan that suggested he should drop Savage Mode 2 on March 13.

Savage Mode 2 serves as the sequel to 21 and Metro’s collaborative effort, which released in July 2016. At the time, the project debuted with nine tracks and featured a guest appearance from Future, who has often worked with both Metro and 21 in the past.

“Me and Savage were playing ‘X’ together,” Metro recalled during an interview in January 2018. “When we first did the song, he had two verses on it, just him. And then I called up Future to be on the song. He had put like a verse or two on there. Me and Savage went in together and chopped up both of the verses, and it was crazy how they just both fit perfectly, they’re rapping back and forth and it sounds like they did it together at the same time. BET in The Basement–type shit, Rap City. I definitely knew in that moment, because we looked at each other like, this is crazy how perfectly this worked out.”

Back in December 2018, 21 dropped off his second studio album, I Am > I Was. The 15-track LP featured Childish Gambino, Yung Miami, Young Nudy, Gunna, J. Cole, Travis Scott and more.

In support of his album, 21 announced the I Am > I Was Tour. The Live Nation-produced event visited cities including Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta and more.
