The first official trailer for the upcoming Beastie Boys documentary Beastie Boys Story has arrived. The film, which centers around the pioneering hip hop group, is directed by their frequent collaborator Spike Jonze and is set to debut in select IMAX theaters on April 2, before hitting the Apple TV+ streaming service on April 24.

Released via YouTube on Wednesday (March 11), the trailer finds the group’s Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz discussing their careers in front of a live stage audience during their 2019 “Beastie Boys Story” tour, along with archived footage from the trio’s 1980’s beginnings.

During the trailer, the pair also remember their fallen bandmate, Adam “MCA” Yauch, who died of cancer in 2012, the same year the Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“Adam Yauch was the driving force,” Horovitz tells the audience on a tour stop. “The one that not only gets themselves going and doing great things, but says, ‘We should all do this.’”

The “Beastie Boys Story” tour followed a 2018 book that chronicled the group’s history and was published in an effort to pay tribute to Yauch.

According to the trailer’s description, the upcoming biopic will feature the two MCs sharing “an intimate, personal story of their band and 40 years of friendship.”

Diamond and Horovitz were expected to appear at this year’s SXSW festival during its film portion to discuss Beastie Boys Story. However, they were forced to pull out of the event due to Apple TV’s decision to cancel the segment amidst growing Coronavirus concerns, with the entire SXSW ultimately getting canceled earlier this week.

Along with Beastie Boys Story, Jonze is also publishing a Beastie Boys picture book, which is expected out on March 17.
