The family of Pop Smoke, who was tragically killed earlier this month, has released their first official public statement since his passing.

“The family of Bashar ‘Pop Smoke’ Jackson would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone for your support,” the statement began. “Every prayer, call and act of kindness is deeply appreciated as we mourn the loss of our son, brother and friend.”

The Brooklyn rapper had just released his album Meet the Woo Vol. 2 a week before his death. He was 20 years old.

“Brooklyn knew him as Bashar,” the Jackson family’s statement continued. “He was educated and nurtured in Brooklyn and his rise to fame all developed from the place he proudly represented. Within the last year, his extraordinary giftedness was revealed to the world, introducing Pop Smoke.”

Authorities are still investigation Pop’s tragic murder. He was fatally shot on Feb. 19 at his home in the Hollywood Hills. Los Angeles law enforcement has previously stated they are looking into other possible motives besides burglary.

“Unfortunately, there are no public details available regarding the murder of our loved one,” the statement concludes. “We ask for respect and responsible reporting during this critical time. Inaccurate reports only add unnecessary pain to a grieving family.”

According to TMZ, the late rapper’s family held a private gathering to honor him on Sunday (Feb. 23) at a church in Brooklyn.

Pop’s passing has been mourned by many in the hip hop community, including 50 Cent, Nicki Minaj, Quavo and more. His record label, Republic Records, issued their own statement after his death.

“We are devastated by the unexpected and tragic loss of [Pop Smoke],” the label wrote on Twitter. “Our prayers and thoughts go out to his family, friends and fans, as we mourn this loss together.”

So far, police have not made any arrests nor identified any suspects in the case. We continue to hold Pop and his loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.
