In a City Girls-type of world where men without wealth don’t succeed in the dating game, Malia Civetz declares her love for the low-income players in her latest visual for “Broke Boy.” Malia’s voice alone makes this single magical, and the theme is the perfect message to the men who love hard but can’t outspend competing suitors:
“I love my broke boy, not a billionaire baller or dough boy/
Used to give him cash so we could get some gas/
‘Cause he know how to give me that ‘O’ boy…/”
Via Paper Magazine, she explained the meaning behind the infectious track:
“I hope this song makes people realize that you might miss out on something amazing if you put a dollar amount on your significant other… This music is a celebration of self and others. There is a lot of honesty, being open about things that are sometimes inappropriately considered shameful. Finding funny ways to talk about important subjects like sex. Also, I’m ready for love and I want it to be the kind of love I know I deserve.”
The music video sees her riding around the city in full celebration with several proverbial “broke boys” in tow. Cheap beer, ramen and other symbols of low wages are peppered throughout like badges of honor for Malia’s co-stars with zero shame.
Malia first broke through in 2017 with her single “Champagne Clouds,” which — thanks to being a part of the University of Southern California Thornton’s Popular Music program — saw its debut on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show. She’s since followed up with equally dope cuts like “Little Victories” and “Just A Little Crush,” even heading out on the road with the likes of JoJo. This year, she looks to deliver a new project for the masses in the Summer.
