LeBron James is reportedly writing a children’s book, set to arrive this summer. According to Entertainment Weekly, the multi-talented NBA superstar entered a two-book deal with HarperCollins Publishers and is currently gearing up to release his first book, titled I PROMISE.

“Books have the ability to teach, inspire and bring people together. That’s why these books, and the opportunity to get children and parents reading together, mean so much to me,” James said in a statement. “Most importantly, we wanted to make sure these stories are ones that every single kid can see themselves in. I PROMISE is powerful in that way and I can’t wait for people to read it.”

The legendary Los Angeles Lakers athlete also took to Instagram to announce the news.

“Our own children’s book!? What!!” he wrote on Tuesday (Feb. 18). “Man, the beauty of this is the process in how we got here. Never settling no matter the opportunities or chapters we add to this journey and now we get to share our promise and our story with kids and families everywhere. I can’t wait for everyone to read this, share this, feel empowered, and strive for greatness the same way my kids from Akron do every day. Middle school edition next.”

I PROMISE will reportedly be illustrated by Nina Mata and will be followed by a middle school-aged book also penned by James, set to arrive in 2021. According to its press release, I PROMISE is “a lively and inspiring picture book that reminds us that tomorrow’s success starts with the promises we make to ourselves and our community today.”

The book’s title is a nod to James’ I Promise School, which he launched in his home state of Ohio back in 2018.

Earlier this month, the four-time NBA MVP announced that the first graduating class from the I Promise School will receive four years free tuition to attend Kent State University, courtesy of his Lebron James Family Foundation.

Upon announcing the news, James listed the school as one of his proudest achievements.

“Besides having three kids and marrying my wife, putting my mom in a position where she never has to worry about anything ever again for the rest of her life, this is right up there,” he said. “Championships, MVPs, I mean points, rebounds and assists, that stuff is whatever. But for me to be able to open up a school and give back to my inner city, so many kids that I know because I was those kids.”

I PROMISE is set to hit shelves this August.
