Eminem’s surprise performance of his 2002 hit “Lose Yourself” at the Oscars caused the sales for the song to spike tremendously.

According to Billboard, on Feb. 9 the song sold 4,000 downloads in the United States, showing a 1,894% increase. On that same day, Em’s entire catalogue sold 7,000 downloads, which was a 307% increase from the 2,000 he sold on Feb. 8.

The track, from the hit movie 8 Mile, was released in 2002 and won an Oscar in 2003 for Best Original Song. Eminem was not present to receive the award at that time, so he came to grace the stage with a performance of the song 17 years later.

After his performance, Eminem took to Twitter referencing the lyrics from his Oscar-winning song. He tweeted, “Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity… Thanks for having me @TheAcademy. Sorry it took me 18 years to get here.”

His surprise performance was apparently in the works for several years and only a few people knew about the actual performance.

“We talked about it with the Academy that Eminem, the fact that he never performed that song and it’s such an anthem, and it’s one everybody knows and it won the Oscar. Wouldn’t it be great to figure out a way to get him to come and do that?” said Robert Mills, Senior Vice President of Alternative Series, Specials and Late-Night Programming at ABC.

”It had to be the right time, it had to be in the right place in the show,” Mills continued. “This year the producers… had a relationship with Interscope, his label and really made it happened — and it surprised us up until a few days before because it really was keeping the circle tight so that nobody would ruin it.”

Em recently scored his 10th No. 1 album with his newest release Music To Be Murdered By. Eminem became the sixth artist with at least 10 No. 1 albums. He joins The Beatles, JAY-Z, Barbra Streisand, Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Presley.

Em also broke his tie with Kanye West for the most No. 1 debuts in a row on the Billboard 200 chart. West recently got his ninth No. 1 album with his 2019 release Jesus Is King.
